President Trump said last year that he would ban people who worked on his 2016 transition team from lobbying for at least six months afterward, as part of his effort to “drain the swamp” in the Capitol. But in just half that time—three months after the 45th commander-in-chief moved into the White House—nine people who were employed on his team have registered as lobbyists. Many of them are registered to lobby the very same agencies—or on the same issues—they worked on during Trump’s transition period, Politico reports. “This is more evidence of the ethical vacuum in the Trump White House,” said Robert Weissman, president of the nonprofit government ethics watchdog Public Citizen. “These revolving-door-esque actions mock everything candidate Trump said about draining the swamp and ending corporate corruption and inside dealing in Washington, D.C.” |

An intense manhunt is underway across Chicago after two police officers were shot Tuesday night, when the perpetrators allegedly pulled up to an unmarked law-enforcement vehicle and opened fire. The officers survived the shooting with non-life-threatening injuries—one was shot in the back, the other in the hip, local reports indicate. They were in serious condition but both were reported stable Tuesday night. Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said authorities are speaking to three people of interest in the investigation. “It’s just another example of how dangerous this job is,” he said. “And I think people take it for granted that when police officers come to work every day, they put their lives on the line every single day they get in their car.” Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez, whose 15th Ward covers the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, said, “It is incomprehensible that this continues in our city, in our state, in our country.” Johnson added, “Listen, if they will fire at police officers like that, they they have no thought process in terms of firing at other citizens of this great city. So, we are going to get them.”

The witnesses who lived through a mass shooting at a San Diego poolside birthday party over the weekend said Tuesday that they believe race played a role in the attack, disputing early police conclusions. “As additional factors come in, we realize there are multiple components to this problem, but we feel heartbreak in the fact that [police are] trying to dismiss a part of the motive,” said Navy Lt. J.G. Lauren Chapman, who was at the party Sunday evening when 49-year-old Peter Selis opened fire. Selis was white, while most of the victims were people of color. Survivors told reporters that a white man who came to the aid of one black female victim was waved away by Selis, who did not fire at him. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Monday that she had “zero information” that led her to believe the attack was motivated by race or prejudice. She pointed to the purported shooter’s mental-health fallout after a recent breakup and financial trouble. Selis, who called his ex-girlfriend during the rampage, was fatally shot by police at the scene.

A suicide bomb aimed at a NATO convoy in Kabul killed eight civilians and wounded at least 25 others Wednesday. Officials said the attack targeted a convoy of armored personnel carriers, and the explosion went off during morning rush hour on one of the Afghan capital’s busiest streets. NATO spokesman Bill Salvin, a U.S. Navy captain, said three U.S. service members were among the wounded in the attack. Mexican police on Tuesday arrested a Sinoloa drug cartel leader notorious for his time as Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman’s right-hand man. Damaso Lopez Nunez, known in the drug world as “the Graduate” for his legal skills, has more recently been on authorities’ radar for his role in battling for control of the Sinoloa cartel. He was arrested at an upscale apartment building in Mexico City early Tuesday, authorities said, and broadcast on television being escorted out by masked police officers and soldiers armed to the teeth. President Enrique Peña Nieto touted the arrest as a major victory in cracking down on the drug cartels, describing it as “another key objective in the battle against criminality” on Twitter. Authorities said three residences were raided as part of the investigation into Lopez, and at least one of his alleged associates was also apprehended. The U.S. is expected to seek extradition of Lopez, who will face accusations of money laundering and smuggling cocaine during his time as a “top lieutenant” of Guzman. |

President Trump took to Twitter late Tuesday to hit back against Hillary Clinton’s claims that FBI Director James Comey contributed to her election loss. “FBI Director Comey was the best thing that ever happened to Hillary Clinton in that he gave her a free pass for many bad deeds!” Trump posted. “The phony Trump/Russia story was an excuse used by the Democrats as justification for losing the election. Perhaps Trump just ran a great campaign?” His comments came hours after Clinton told a crowd in New York that she was “on the way to winning” until Comey sent congressional leaders a letter on Oct. 28 announcing that the FBI would investigate new emails in a scandal that plagued Clinton throughout her campaign. The move was seen by some as an act of sabotage deliberately timed for release shortly before Election Day. |

Kremlin critic and opposition leader Alexei Navalny said Tuesday that he’s been left almost completely blind in one eye after suffering chemical burns from an attack last week. Navalny, an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin who has announced plans to run in next year’s presidential election, was splashed in the face with chemicals last Thursday, an attack that initially seemed to have only involved a harmless antiseptic liquid. On his website Tuesday, however, Navalny said a doctor had expressed certainty that a corrosive chemical had been thrown into his eye, depriving him of 80 percent of his vision in that eye. “I am being actively treated, and there is hope that it will be cured,” Navalny wrote, having vowed earlier this week to run for president even if he loses all sight in the eye. A video of last week’s attack broadcast on a Kremlin-friendly network showed the assailant with his face blurred out, though opposition activists have identified him as a pro-Kremlin activist. Moscow police have opened an investigation into the attack, but Navalny said Tuesday that no arrests have been made and little work has been done to move the probe along.

United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Oscar Munoz apologized before U.S. lawmakers at a four-hour hearing Tuesday on customer-service issues in the airline industry. Facing questions from the House Transportation Committee about an incident last month in which a 69-year-old passenger was forcibly removed from his seat and dragged down the aisle of an overbooked flight, Munoz apologized for what he described as a “mistake of epic proportions.” “In that moment for our customers and our company we failed, and so as CEO, at the end of the day, that is on me,” Munoz said. The airline reached a settlement with that passenger, David Dao, for an undisclosed sum last week, but the incident has underscored problems in the airline industry that some believe warrant tighter regulations. American Airlines also came under fire last month after an employee nearly came to blows with a passenger in a dramatic scene caught on video. Lawmakers at the hearing threatened to pass legislation to prevent such customer-service catastrophes, but they stopped short of announcing any concrete plans. “If airlines don’t get their act together, we are going to act; it is going to be one size fits all. Seize this opportunity because if you don’t, we’re going to come, and you’re not going to like it,” said Bill Shuster, the transportation committee’s chairman. In addition to Munoz, executives from American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines were in attendance.

According to a report in The Dallas Morning News, the Balch Springs Police Department fired officer Roy Oliver on Tuesday after he fatally shot 15-year-old Jordan Edwards over the weekend. Edwards’ brothers were also in the car and initially police claimed that the car was aggressively backing up toward them. The police department said Oliver violated several policies, but would not say which ones. “Not only have Jordan’s brothers lost their best friend; they witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless, murder,” the family of Edwards said in a statement. “Their young lives will forever be altered. No one, let alone young children, should witness such horrific, unexplainable violence.” Police were reportedly in the neighborhood because of a call about a house party. Police Chief Jonathan Haber said he watched body-cam footage of the shooting and determined that the car was in fact moving forward when the officer fired and one of Edwards’ brothers was driving. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting. |

In an interview with The Washington Post, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the Democratic Party does not need to toe the party line on abortion. “This is the Democratic Party. This is not a rubber-stamp party,” Pelosi said. She also suggested that the party's rigidity on social issues contributed to its loss in the 2016 presidential election. “You know what? That’s why Donald Trump is president of the United States—the evangelicals and the Catholics, anti-marriage equality, anti-choice. That’s how he got to be president,” Pelosi said. “Everything was trumped, literally and figuratively, by that.” Pelosi added: “It’s kind of fading as an issue. It really is.” Drew Hammill, a spokesman for Pelosi, later issued a statement clarifying her comments, saying she meant that the issue had ceased to be divisive because “the vast majority of Democrats in Congress are staunchly pro-choice.” “House Democrats recognize, while there are differences in the closest of families about deeply held personal beliefs, legislating those beliefs onto others is a complete non-starter,” Hammill said. |
