U.N. Says 93,000 Killed in Syria

Syria’s been a bloodbath for a while, but it keeps getting worse. According to new United Nations figures, 93,000 people have been killed so far in the country’s uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. That’s an increase of 30,000 since the last report that covered figures through November 2012, and represents a rate of 5,000 deaths per month. Eighty percent of the deaths were men, though the U.N. has documented 1,700 children killed, and said both Assad’s regime and the rebels have used boys and girls as human shields. U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay said there were also cases of individual children being killed, as well as entire families at once.
