After the daughter of the Afghan ambassador to Pakistan was abducted Saturday, Afghanistan has withdrawn the ambassador and diplomats from Pakistan’s capital, the Afghan foreign ministry said Sunday. The ambassador’s daughter, Silsila Alikhil, was riding to her family’s home in Islamabad when unknown assailants attacked and held her for several hours before she escaped. Pakistan authorities said they are investigating the matter but it’s unclear if anyone’s been caught or identified. Until then, the Afghan government has elected to remove the ambassador until the perpetrators are arrested and punished, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Taliban insurgents have taken over territory in Afghanistan since President Joe Biden’s withdrawal of U.S. troops. Pakistan has been central to the country’s peace process, though neighboring countries say Pakistan has created safe havens for the Taliban in the past. On Saturday, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan said he wants those involved in Alikhil’s abduction caught within 48 hours.
