China Arrests Three Journalists

HUMAN RIGHTS?

After they reported on self-immolation.

The director of a human-rights website and three citizen journalists have been taken into custody by Chinese authorities for reporting on recent events in Tiananmen Square, including what was apparently a self-immolation. One of the volunteers, Wang Jing, was sent to her home province, where she is in detention for “provoking and stirring trouble.” Wang had reported on an attempt at self-immolation on March 5, which was the first day of the National People’s Congress in Beijing. Another reported on the vandalization of a giant portrait of Mao Zedong that overlooks the square. Huang Qi, who was the director of the rights website 64 Tianwang, was arrested after posting the reports from the detained journalists.
