I hope you’re enjoying a nice fall day as we enter the heart of November. We lead off this week with Clive Irving who reports on the wealthy’s newest obsession—  eVTOL. It stands for electric-powered vertical takeoff and landing, and would combine the agility of a helicopter and the speed of a commuter jet in a new kind of flying machine, offering the rich “a new way of avoiding the multiple miseries of ground travel in America.”

I’m very excited about this very cool feature from Alex Sakalis on Ladinia, a mysterious but stunning region of Italy with an incredible history and a perplexing language. “Is there something especially beautiful about this part of the Dolomites,” Sakalis asks, “or is there just an added layer of romanticism evoked by the Ladins, sequestered in their pocket paradise, defiantly holding onto their ancient tongue, rich mythology and unique identity against all the odds?”

For many of us travelers, France is always on our minds, and we’re always on the lookout for great places to stay around the country. Loïc Cardinal takes us to a fairytale chateau in the Loire, the valley where France’s kings and queens built their country palaces.

Travel to Turn of the Century Japan

So much of our travel, from museums to historic neighborhoods to reenactments, are an attempt to travel back into the past. The same goes for coffee table books, whether they be photos of Paris by Marville or the Golden Age of Hollywood. That’s why our latest selection for Just Booked, our series on gorgeous travel related coffee table books, is the latest in Taschen’s series on various destinations at the turn of the century—Japan 1900.

The extra large book is filled with more than 700 photos from the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th and have been lightly colorized. They capture a Japan as it slowly opens up to the world and becomes a major stop on the steamship routes (so popular that the word globetrotter was created to describe its western visitors).
